ITV News announced today that Catherine Jones has been appointed as Health Editor. Catherine, who is expected to join the newsroom at the beginning of May, will lead all coverage and provide in-depth analysis of the latest stories on health, medicine and the NHS. She will also provide special reports for ITV Tonight and ITV’s new monthly current affairs strand, On Assignment.
Catherine, who joins from Channel 5 News where she is Health Correspondent, will be taking over the health brief from Lawrence McGinty, who retires as Science & Medical Editor this summer, after an award-winning career at ITV News.
At Channel 5 News, Catherine gained recognition for her special investigation into dangerous gastric band surgeons and for revealing important shifts in scientific opinion on conditions such as dementia. Last year her investigation into the illegal sale of DIY cosmetic ‘dermal filler’ injections led the Medicines Regulator to take action against the company concerned, and played an important part in Channel 5 News’ nomination for RTS Programme of the Year.
Catherine Jones said: “I am thrilled to be joining the award-winning ITV News team. It’s an exciting time to take up the role of Health Editor, with the turbulent transformation of the NHS underway and society facing an unprecedented set of health challenges. I look forward to tackling these complex issues with the support of ITV’s incredibly talented newsroom.”
An experienced and versatile reporter, before specialising in health, Catherine was embedded with the Desert Rats during the Iraq War and she covered many other major news events, including the aftermath of 9/11 and the Damilola Taylor trial. Before moving to ITN, she worked as a Broadcast Journalist at both Euronews and Independent Radio News.
Geoff Hill, Editor of ITV News said: “Catherine is an immensely experienced television journalist, who has spent several years reporting the biggest health and medical stories. She’s a hungry, investigative reporter and I’m absolutely thrilled she’s decided to join our team of specialist editors at ITV News.”
