David Mannion takes on new role at ITN

David Mannion announced today that he is stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of ITV News to take on a new role at the company.

Following a hugely successful tenure at ITV News, David will formally leave his current position in July. He will then assume the new role of special adviser to ITN CEO John Hardie.

This newly-created position will see David draw on his unrivalled experience in television news to influence ITN’s strategy and policy at a corporate level. He will also advise on future planning, new business opportunities and revenue growth outside of ITN’s core contracts.

David Mannion said: ‘This has been a huge decision for me but, after a decade in my current role, it feels the appropriate time for me to do other things.

‘I am privileged to have worked at ITN with some of the greatest TV news professionals of our time and I am genuinely delighted to be taking on my new role working closely with my CEO John Hardie.’

John Hardie, Chief Executive Officer of ITN, said: ‘David is a force of nature whose impact is evident in every part of ITV News – from delivering world exclusives to building an incredibly talented team around him. He leaves ITV News on a real high, with News at Ten named Programme of the Year by both the RTS and BAFTA – just the latest in a hatful of industry accolades and achievements.

‘I look forward to working even more closely with David and utilising his experience in developing the commercial future for ITN. What we lose from the ITV newsroom, ITN gains corporately and strategically by harnessing David’s knowledge and expertise.’

Michael Jermey, ITV Director of News, Current Affairs and Sport, said: “David is an extraordinarily talented broadcast journalist. He has played a major role in shaping modern television news. David has been a key driving force behind news on ITV in five separate decades. His enormous contribution to ITV News cannot be overstated.

‘David has a passion for television journalism which is unsurpassed with a determination to always be first to the story. He has an incredible track record. One of his finest moments must surely be landing the world’s first interview with Nelson Mandela following Mr Mandela’s release from prison. I wish David every success for the future and am delighted that he’s going to maintain a close association with ITN.’

David Mannion first joined ITN in 1979 and is unique in ITV having been Editor of ITV News, GMTV and two of ITV’s flagship current affairs strands, Tonight with Trevor McDonald and the Cook Report. He was also deputy editor of Channel 4 News.

He is a fellow of the RTS, a visiting professor at the University of the Arts and a doctor of letters at Derby University.

In a stellar career that started as a trainee reporter at the Long Eaton Advertiser, David has won numerous awards. He was given the prestigious Judges Award at the Royal Television Society Journalist Awards in 2006 and he has overseen coverage that has generated many other international and domestic awards for ITV News. These include International Emmys and awards for investigative and distinctive journalism.
