Gary Speed inquest records narrative verdict

    Tue Jan 31 2012 14:45

The coroner at the inquest into the death of Gary Speed has recorded a narrative verdict, stating there was not enough evidence to prove that he deliberately took his own life.

The inquest heard how former Wales football manager Gary texted his wife days before his death talking in terms of "taking his life".

Louise Speed told Warrington Coroner's Court on Monday of a text conversation she had with her husband, 42, just days before she discovered him hanged at their Cheshire home on November 27 last year.

The inquest heard the ex-footballer, who played Sheffield United, Everton, Newcastle, Leeds and Bolton, had talked in terms of taking his life but he had "dismissed it", saying he was "excited" about his life with his wife and two sons.

Mrs Speed said the text message referred to their "ups and downs" but went on to say "how important the boys were" and talked about "moving forward".

The inquest heard the couple "had words" on the night before he was found dead after a dinner party, but Mrs Speed said the exchange was "something and nothing".
