Award-winning broadcaster Sian Williams To Host ‘5 News at 5’
Channel 5 today announces Sian Williams as the new face of its flagship evening news programme, which airs daily at 5pm.
5 News at 5 is the first early peak terrestrial news broadcast of the day and provides an essential look at the day’s news. A pillar of the Channel 5 schedule, the programme was nominated for RTS Programme of the Year in both 2015 and 2014. Sian’s appointment builds on the warmth, authority and innovation of the 5 News brand.
Sian, who joins in the New Year, said: “I’ve always admired ITN’s approach to news and 5 News’ output, both domestic and international, is consistently high quality and accessible. With Channel 5 pledging to boost its coverage even further, it’s a terrific opportunity and an exciting challenge to join this talented and impressive team.”
Hugely respected across the industry and with nearly three decades of journalistic experience in production, reporting and presentation, Sian spent more than ten years anchoring BBC Breakfast, has presented all the main BBC One News bulletins and continues to make documentaries for BBC Radio 4.
Sian has also hosted high profile BBC programmes such as Crimewatch, Goodnight Britain, and National Treasures Live and been part of the presentation team for much of the BBC’s major events coverage, such as the London Olympics, the Royal Wedding and the recent anniversaries of D-Day and the outbreak of World War One. Sian currently presents the BBC One weekly programme, Sunday Morning Live. One of her broadcasts was listed in the Radio Times’ Top 10 broadcast interviews of all time and she was awarded the Television and Radio Industries Club Best Newsreader/Reporter twice in successive years.
Beyond broadcasting, Sian is a trained trauma assessor with an MSc in Psychology. She’s written for newspapers and academic journals and given keynote speeches on recovery after trauma, at Universities and Psychology conventions. She herself covered major humanitarian events such as the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and the Asian Tsunami in 2004.
Michelle Chappell, Commissioning Editor of Factual, News and Current Affairs commented: “Sian is one of the UK’s most widely respected news presenters who will add to the wealth of experience, knowledge and insight within the 5 News team. Sian’s ability to deliver the biggest stories of the day with charisma and warmth has made her one of the best known and most versatile broadcasters on British television.”
5 News Editor Cristina Nicolotti Squires added: “I’m really excited about welcoming Sian to the 5 News team. Her deep connection with the audience plus her rich background in broadcasting make her the perfect person to bring the news to life for our viewers.”
Sian joins a dynamic and accomplished team of journalists at 5 News which includes presenter Matt Barbet. Matt will continue to present 5 News Tonight daily at 6.30pm and The Saturday Show at 09:30– 11:30.
After five successful years at 5 News Emma Crosby leaves the programme in November.
Michelle Chappell said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Emma Crosby for her hard work during her time at 5 News, and her significant contribution to its continuing success.”
