London8 has submitted an application to run London’s new Local TV channel and promises an innovative mix of entertainment, London news and information, debate & discussion, plus comprehensive travel information and the most reliable London weather forecasts available.
The London8 applicant group is headed by chair Luke Johnson, one of Britain’s most successful entrepreneurs and former chair of Channel Four. The group includes a mix of broadcast professionals including Paul Jackson, former Head of Comedy & Entertainment at both the BBC and ITV, and BAFTA award winning producer William Burdett-Coutts.
ITN will provide an hourly service of London news seven days a week as well as extra journalism resources for London8’s programming. The station will be a multi-platform service available subscription-free on Freeview channel 8 as well as on smartphones, tablets and desktops.
Chair Luke Johnson says “The Olympics have proved beyond doubt that London is one of the world’s greatest cities and Londoners deserve their own local television service. London has a larger population than many European countries. We’ve assembled a unique combination of broadcasting talents for London8 who’ll make it a commercially successful channel, and at the same time provide a cost-effective new advertising opportunity for London’s local business.”
Mark Browning, Managing Director at ITN Productions, says: “London8 has a dynamic and compelling proposition for a local television service that will be of significance and relevance to Londoners. We are proud that ITN Productions can play a part in this vision for the future by bringing our newsgathering and production expertise to the fore of the London8 service.”
London8 will be based beside Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, one of the UK’s best-equipped TV facilities.
William Burdett-Coutts, chair of Riverside TV Studios says “Riverside is already home to some of the UK’s favourite shows including The Apprentice: You’re Fired, Russell Howard’s Good News and the BAFTA award-winning Celebrity Juice. I’m delighted our team will be working with London8 to provide new opportunities for London talent as well as greatly increasing coverage of London’s arts and entertainment scene.”Back to All Press Releases
