ITN Celebrates Best Home News, Best International News And News Programme Of The Year Wins At Rts Television Journalism Awards

Newsrooms at ITN are today celebrating success following their win last night of three Royal Television Society Television Journalism Awards, beating the BBC, Five News and Al Jazeera in respective categories. These prestigious gongs recognise the extraordinary work that ITN journalists at ITV News and Channel 4 News have produced over the last year.

Channel 4 News, won two awards, for best International News and best Home News. Channel 4 News’ Apache Company film shot by Sean Smith showed what it was like at the forefront of the ‘Surge’ last July as the U.S. Army tried to win its battle with the insurgents in central Iraq. The judges described the film as ‘raw, brave, atmospheric and profoundly memorable. An important story very powerfully realised.’

In the Home News category Channel 4 News’ Home Affairs Correspondent Simon Israel whose outstanding report revealing the links between the Operation Crevice Trial and the 7/7 bombers won the prize. The judges said ”The winner stood out as an enterprising piece of television journalism that was genuinely shocking. A serious tale told with great care and attention to detail and a real tribute to the correspondent responsible.’ Despite restrictions on the reporting of this story, Simon secured exclusive material illustrating just how much the security services knew of this group prior to the 7/7 attacks.

Commenting on the Channel 4 News award wins, Editor Jim Gray said: “These wins are the result of terrific journalism and production – and sheer hard work – right across our team and to have walked away with both Home and International news awards is a great tribute to the breadth and versatility of our programme.’

ITN’s Evening News programme for ITV won News Programme of the Year for the third year running – and the fourth time in total making it the only news programme to win the award more than once since it was introduced in 2001. The RTS judges described the programme as “a vintage team performance marked by some outstanding personal contributions. It showed the strength of popular journalism at its very best with shrewd judgment on where to put resources.’

Deborah Turness, Editor of ITV News, said: “To win the RTS News Programme of the Year is the greatest recognition of our journalism we could ask for. To win it for the third year in a row is an extraordinary testament to the ambition, drive and commitment of the entire team, to bring the drama that is news to a mass audience. Whether Zimbabwe, Iraq, Afghanistan, climate change in Antarctica…..or news on your doorstep…….no matter what the story or where it happens, the ITV Evening News makes viewers care about it.”

Mark Wood, Chief Executive of ITN, said: “ITN has had another great year and these prestigious Awards recognise the extraordinary work of our talented ITV News and Channel 4 News journalists. Our teams continue to deliver high quality news coverage, in a commercial environment, for ITV and Channel 4 that is rigorous and challenging and this year we are delighted to welcome back the iconic News at Ten on ITV.”

Last night, the Royal Television Society Lifetime Achievement Award went to John Suchet, who joined ITN in 1972, retiring only four years ago. The judges said that for more than 35 years in television news John Suchet had not only put viewers at their ease but also his colleagues, adding that despite years of success ‘he’s still a pretty modest guy’. The judges also praised his reporting background and his ‘enormous authority when he turned to presenting news programmes and live commentaries on ceremonial events’. Accepting his award, John Suchet talked at length about his time at ITN and what it had meant to him, praising a prevalent ethos of team work and all those people behind the scenes who had given him his chances and breaks over the years.
