A film by the ‘beatboxing vicar’ Gavin Tyte has won The Nativity Factor, a competition online and via social media to find the most creative interpretation of the story of the Nativity.
His film The Beatbox Nativity was chosen by judges as the winning entry in the competition created by ITN Productions with support from Jerusalem Productions, which is funded by the Jerusalem Trust, one of The Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. Runner up film was The Greatest Story Ever Told, with a three way tie for third place.
Gavin Tyte’s film has also had the most online hits in The Nativity Factor, with almost 20,000 Youtube views already. As competition winner, Gavin Tyte, from Uplyme and Axmouth, Devon. claims a £5,000 prize.
The Nativity Story by a band called Yesterday’s Jam was picked as winner in the youth category for budding film-makers under 16. It won its creators from Roseland Community College in Cornwall £1,000 and a day spent at ITN. Second place in this category was The Brick Nativity, followed by a two-way tie for third place.
There were over 70 entries to the The Nativity Factor, with judges selecting the winners from a shortlist following a public vote. Entries were judged on creativity, style and story by the panel of judges: former Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams, ITV News at Ten presenter Julie Etchingham, Head of Factual and Features at ITN Productions Emma Read, and Bridget Cass from Jerusalem Productions.
Commenting on the top entries, the judges said:
Julie Etchingham on The Beatbox Nativity: “A fantastic short film full of wit and humour – perfectly formatted. The rap was pure genius, and stayed close to the story from Luke’s gospel without losing any of its impact. If there were ever a way of breaking the Nativity through to a new generation, then this is surely it. My kids watched it over and over again – we loved it in our house.”
Bridget Cass on The Beatbox Nativity: “This is absolutely brilliant – it is very stylish and really clever. The story is Biblical and informative and you get something new from it every time you watch it but it may be difficult for those who don’t know the story. It manages to tell the entire Christmas story in a very short space of time.”
Michelle Williams on The Greatest Story Ever Told: “I like how they made it relevant to 2011 by using their Iphone and making Jesus have lots of friends on Facebook. I especially loved when the passerby took a photo of Jesus with his phone, because that’s what people do … we are always taking pics with our phones!”
Julie Etchingham on The Nativity Story: “This short film deserves first place because of all the amazing talent on display in it. The song is original and sung beautifully and is incredibly catchy. And the little film is hilarious. Well done to the team who put it all together.”
Emma Read on The Brick Nativity: “This little film really packed in the humour and 21st century references – I could really hear an authentic teenage voice and sense of humour.”
