British teenage acting sensation Alex Pettyfer sent hundreds of female fans into a frenzy at the red carpet premiere of summer blockbuster Stormbreaker.

The 16-year-old, who plays young super-spy Alex Rider, lapped up the attention in London's Leicester Square.

He was picked from 500 hopefuls to play the hero of Anthony Horowitz's books in the most sought after child role since Harry Potter.

Ewan McGregor, Mickey Rourke, Bill Nighy, Alicia Silverstone, Damian Lewis and Sophie Okonedo also appear in the film adaptation.

Horowitz's books have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and been translated into at least 28 languages.

The film was shot in the UK and Isle of Man.
