Updated 09.09 Tue Jul 08 2008

An action plan to help people who are struggling with their finances has been launched.

Consumers suffering from the growing burden of rising food and fuel prices and higher mortgage costs often do not know where to turn for advice, the Government said.

Ministers are ploughing a "significant" sum into an advertising campaign to alert people to the helpline and the Moneymadeclear website run by the FSA

It plans to boost the Financial Services Authority's consumer helpline so that it can give guidance to more people.

Ministers are also ploughing a "significant" sum into an advertising campaign to alert people to the helpline and the Moneymadeclear website run by the FSA.

The Government said it wants the website and helpline to act as a "one-stop shop" for people, offering them information on everything from budgeting and managing debt to comparison tables on financial products and information for first-time buyers.

The website and helpline will also be able to refer people to other sources of help such as the National Debtline or independent advice on cutting utility bills.

Economic Secretary to the Treasury Kitty Ussher said: "There is a lot of anxiety out there that wasn't there a year ago. It is important that everyone can have a place they can go to."
