Glenn Roeder's Newcastle have been knocked out of the Uefa Cup after a 2-0 in Holland at the hands of AZ Alkmaar.
The Premiership club squandered a 4-2 first leg lead as Shota Arveladze and Danny Koevermans both scored to force a 4-4 draw on aggregate and AZ progressed on the away goals rule.
"I think the best team went through" - Louis Van Gaal
AZ manager Louis Van Gaal said: "I think the best team went through. We scored two chances but we have had three or four.
"Newcastle also had chances but because of the second half in Newcastle we were better, I believe.
"Newcastle are a top team so this match I think is the best match we could have played and I have to give my players a big compliment."
