Wigan have restored their six-point cushion above the relegation zone by beating Newcastle 1-0 at the JJB Stadium.

Ryan Taylor scored the only goal of the game, curling a free-kick past Shay Given five minutes before half-time.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell was forced to pick his 37-year-old third-choice goalkeeper John Filan as Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt were both injured.

Filan proved his worth by saving a Nolberto Solano penalty while the game was still goalless.

Charlton moved within three points of Wigan when they thrashed West Ham 4-0 on Saturday but the Latics are now one point behind Sheffield United and Manchester City, and three points behind Aston Villa and Fulham.
