A British woman and her daughter have died after being swept away by floodwater in Spain.

The pair, whose bodies have now been retrieved, were trying to cross the River Clariano in L'Olleria, near Valencia, to get home but were carried off by the current.

Two other women who were with them managed to get out of the river and alert police

The 47-year-old mother was named as Lorraine Cullen. She and her 14-year-old daughter Lauren had lived in Spain for the past four years, police said.

One was reported to be the dead woman's other daughter.

The Valencia region has experienced heavy rains in the last few days, with floodwater blocking roads and railway lines.

The ports of Valencia, Gandia and Sagunto have also had to close.

In southern Spain, stormy weather prompted the suspension of ferry links with the Moroccan port of Tangier and Spain's north African enclave of Ceuta.
