Keegan and Newcastle in limbo

Newcastle insist Kevin Keegan has not been fired but there are suggestions he is negotiating his position at the club.

Widespread reports suggested Keegan had left the club and he did not turn up for training on Tuesday.

But Newcastle issued a statement denying they had sacked the manager and announcing they would like him to continue in the job.

Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the League Managers' Association, has revealed Keegan and the club are discussing his future.

He said: "He has not resigned. He is in a difficult position, he'll be discussing really important issues with the Newcastle board over the next few days.

"The football club and fans everybody knows are massively important to Kevin and after such heavy coverage and speculation yesterday it was important to make this statement that he has not resigned."
