Detailed search of Kent house continues

Police searching a property in Kent where two sets of human remains were found are now focussing on the house itself.

A week ago Essex Police discovered the body of 15-year-old Vicky Hamilton, who disappeared in 1991, in the back garden of the property in Margate. Remains believed to be those of Dinah McNicol, who went missing the same year, were found on Friday.

"I will cry, but not in front of you lot" - Ian McNicol

The house was once lived in by Peter Tobin, who has now been charged with Vicky's murder.

Police completed their search of the ground floor over the weekend and will now continue looking for possible clues on the first floor and the attic.

Dinah's father, Ian McNicol, visited the property on Monday, and told reporters it had been a difficult experience.

"But at least they have found her remains and I can speak for the whole family that we can now put her to rest and grieve in our own time which is what we have wanted for 16 years," he said.

Just before he was led away by police officers, Mr McNicol, 68, added: "I will cry, but not in front of you lot."

Essex Police spokeswoman Tabitha Wilson said formal identification of what are believed to be Miss McNicol's remains is not expected for some time.

She said: "The excavation work is now complete.

"Forensic archaeologists have assessed this and there have been no further finds.

"We have used specialist dogs today to assist with the internal examination of the property. Further work is being carried out and will continue tomorrow."

Reports suggested that other addresses where Tobin has lived across the country could be searched amid fears that further bodies might be concealed.

Steve Watts, assistant chief constable of Hampshire Police and chairman of an Acpo (Association of Chief Police Officers)-led scoping inquiry codenamed Operation Anagram, said there is no immediate plan to search further properties.

He said: "We are aware that members of the media have identified addresses and locations where Tobin may or may not have lived.

"At this time, Operation Anagram is a national scoping exercise to identify whether there are any issues of concern that will require further action.

"There is no plan at this time to search any further premises but these options will be considered should the intelligence and evidence developed within Operation Anagram warrant it.

"Any searches will be carried out in consultation with current occupants and/or owners."
