Winnie Mandela: Nobody knows Nelson Mandela better than I do

Report & Video by Mark Morris

Winnie Mandela does not have much downtime in between hospital visits at the moment, but at the weekend, she gave an exclusive interview with ITV News in the garden of her Soweto home.

Winnie, 76, was married to Nelson Mandela, 94, for nearly 40 years, and claims to know him better than anyone else.

"Nobody knows him better than I do," she said.

"It is extremely painful to see him going through what he is going through now."

During the interview, she was sitting next to their daughter Zindzi Mandela and both say they are offended at claims the former South African president's family have considered asking doctors to end his life.

"It is nonsense to suggest we needed to take a decision," said Winnie.

Zindzi added: "He is deciding what is happening with himself.

"It is between him and his maker, it has nothing to do with us whatsoever."

The mother and daughter also commented on a photocall that took place a few weeks ago, that saw Nelson Mandela appear alongside current South African president Jacob Zuma.

He looked particularly frail and unwell.

Winnie said: "I honestly cannot put in words how hurt the family was and it was one of the most insensitive things for anyone to have done."
