Residents on the eastern coast of the US have woken up to the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, which has left behind a trail of destruction.

Aerial footage from Washington DC shows road, homes and cars under water and trees and power lines toppled over.

In New Jersey many boats have capsized or floated aground.

Millions of people in the US are without power and at least 50 people have died.
