The Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, has flown to France for further treatment following an accidental shooting which left him "lightly wounded".
Aziz was injured when his presidential convoy, on its way back to Nouakchott, came under attack from an army unit on patrol. The soldiers apparently opened fire by mistake.
The president appeared on state television following the accident to reassure people that he had not been seriously harmed.
"I want to calm all citizens. The operation last night was a success thanks to the effectiveness of the medical team," he said.
He added: "I want to reassure everyone about my state of health after this incident committed by error by an army unit on an unpaved road near Touela. Thanks to God, I am doing well."
