Taiwan's first same-sex Buddhist wedding

Report by Rob Gillett

Lesbian couple Huang Mei-yu and You Ya-ting married on Saturday in the first ever same-sex Buddhist wedding ceremony in Taiwan.

The couple, who are both 30, exchanged vows and prayer beads instead of rings at the service in Taoyuan in the north-west of the country.

Buddhist monks chanted as the couple entered the monastery.

Friends and supporters attended the ceremony but the couple's families were absent.

Huang Mei-yu said: "Our families did not accept today's ceremony.

"We know that they don't agree with this. But we know that in their hearts they love us both."
