A fire has ravaged California's third largest oil refinery in the heart of a San Francisco suburb.

Firefighters battled the flames at the massive plant in Richmond for over six hours.

More than 200 people needed hospital treatment as smoke spread over the densely populated area.

The refinery makes almost a quarter of a million barrels of oil every day but it has may be forced to drastically reduce production.
