Pussy Riot protest: Artist sews mouth together in support

Report by Sophie Foster

A Russian artist has sewn his mouth together in support of three members of punk rock group Pussy Riot, who are currently under arrest for their anti-Putin protest.

Standing with his mouth sewn shut in front of St. Petersburg's Kazan Cathedral, Petr Pavlensky held a banner reading: "Pussy Riot act is a replay of a famous act by Jesus Christ."

The three musicians, all in their 20s, have been charged with hooliganism since storming the altar of Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral in February to stage a "punk prayer" to the Virgin Mary to "Throw Putin Out!"

Rights groups and defence lawyers for Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich, who face up to seven years in prison if convicted, say the case against them is politically motivated.

Police called an ambulance for Pavlensky but he was discharged by doctors after a check-up.
