A car has fallen more than eight metres down a lift shaft in Manhattan.

The vehicle plunged down the column on the Upper East Side when an elevator platform failed to move into position.

Police said at least one person was pulled out of the overturned vehicle and taken to the hospital.

A second person on the lower floor of the car park was apparently also injured.

Both are reported to be in a stable condition.
