Police in New Jersey have released astonishing footage of a crash involving a drunk driver, in a stark warning of the dangers of getting behind the wheel under the influence.

The film shows a vehicle running a red light at speed before ploughing into oncoming traffic, then flying through the air into a lamp-post and landing on its roof.

The moment of impact was captured by security cameras set up to catch red-light running drivers.
