Mohammed Mursi has been sworn in as Egypt's first democratically elected president in a ceremony in Cairo.

As a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, he is also the first Islamist leader and the first not to have come from the ranks of the military.

During the private event, Mursi promised to deliver a "new Egypt" in front of judges at the Supreme Constitutional Court in the country's capital.

It has been 16 months since the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak as leader.
