Premature baby saved by scissors

Report & Video by Ashley Fudge

One of the smallest babies born in the UK has survived, thanks to a pair of scissors.

Maddalena Douse was born at just 23 weeks and was so tiny doctors weren't sure if they could save her.

When they put her on the scales she weighed just 1lb, which is the minimum weight for a baby to be considered viable.

So, medics fought to save her and put her on a ventilator.

They then discovered a pair of scissors had been accidentally left on the scales and eight inch Maddalena had in fact weighed only 382 grams.

Her mother Kate Douse said it was a terrifying time for her and her partner Renato: "I remember picking up a pillow and just screaming into it because everything I had ever heard about premature babies, I had only ever heard about 24 weekers and I was 5 days away from that. So I just thought there was no hope."

Now Maddalena is home with her parents in Lewes, East Sussex and recovering well.

Kate said: "How is she sat here, little chunky, six pounds 12 ounces. She is just amazing. I waste hours just staring at her because she just shouldn't be here. I'm just in awe of her."
