The new BBC boss George Entwistle has sent an email to the corporation's staff, requesting them co-operare with police investigating the Jimmy Savile allegations.

He has urged BBC staff members to "come forward" if they have any information about the allegations against the presenter.

Mr Entwistle's email said he was "appalled" by the claims made in an ITV documentary about the once iconic TV host.

Five women alleged that Sir Jimmy sexually assaulted them when they were teenagers in the ITV1 documentary which aired on Wednesday, and many more women have come forward since then. The BBC says no complaints were received at the time of the alleged abuses.

Scotland Yard is now investigating the case.
