St John Ambulance first aider tells how he saved a life

Report by Lauren Hood

A man, who saved a woman from choking to death in a restaurant, has spoken of the rescue.

Jim Earnshaw works for St John Ambulance and was eating out with friends when one of the group got a piece of food stuck in her throat.

He explains what happened next: "I basically got up, went across and gave her a couple of hard thumps on the back, the object came out and she was fine."

Luckily for this woman it was a happy ending but Jim says it could have been very different: "If there'd been nobody there who knew what to do, or nobody there that was willing to step forward and do it, then , quite clearly, this lady could've choked to death."
