Two young boys who were onboard a six-man canoe which capsized in the Scottish Highlands have died in hospital.

The three and five-year-olds were rescued by helicopter from Loch Gairloch on Sunday afternoon after the boat overturned.

A five-year-old girl who was airlifted to Broadford Hospital in Skye after being plucked from the loch remains seriously ill.

A 35-year-old man and a ten-year-old girl managed to swin to shore after the canoe capsized to alert Stornoway Coastguard.

A 34-year-old man remains unaccounted for and a search will resume at the scene on Monday morning.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: "Police can confirm that the two boys aged three and five years who were recovered from the water off Gairloch and conveyed to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, have since died.

"Search efforts for the missing 34-year-old man have been suspended for the night and are due to recommence at first light."
