A coroner has criticised the Army for its failure to take action to prevent the death of a soldier who was killed by an improvised explosive device on a training range in Afghanistan.

Lance Corporal James Hill, of the 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards, died on the firing range just outside Camp Bastion in central Helmand on October 8, 2009.

The inquest at Woking heard the chain of command had not listened to concerns about security at the site and the potential for insurgents to target the range.

Surrey Coroner Richard Travers also said they had not provided sufficiently trained units to carry out IED clearance at the site.
