Flash floods hit northern England

Torrential downpours have brought flooding to large parts of northern England, forcing people to leave their homes as more than a month's worth of rain fell in 24 hours.

The deluges battered revellers at the Isle of Wight Festival and brought havoc to Cumbria which buckled under the worst of the wet weather.

Up to 100 mm of rain hit the region overnight, while south-west Scotland, Northern Ireland and Lancashire also experienced unusually heavy rainfall.

The Environment Agency has issued more than 90 flood warnings and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has five in place.
