Barely 24 hours after Surrey's rising star Tom Maynard was killed, The Kia Oval will play host to a sombre cricket game as England take on the West Indies.

23-year-old Maynard died at around 5am on Monday after being hit by a London Underground train at Wimbledon Park.

It is thought the Cardiff-born player, son of former England cricketer Matthew Maynard, may have been trying to avoid police at the time of his death.

The big-hitting batsman earned himself a place on the England Lions tour to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the start of this year.

His death sent shockwaves throughout the cricket world, with many leading figures taking to Twitter to express their grief.

Hugh Morris, Managing Director of England cricket, said the country had seen one of its brightest prospects taken away way before time.

"He had the world at his feet. I played with his old man when he played for England and Tom was very much on that pathway."
