Sophie Hitchon happy with hammer performance

Report by Mark Morris

Team GB's Sophie Hitchon may not have won a medal in the London 2012 hammer but she is looking on the bright side after a much-better-than-expected performance at the Games.

She finished twelfth in the final after qualifying in impressive style with a British record 71.98m throw.

She threw 69.33m in the final, and it would have a taken an incredibly long throw for her to make the top eight.

She said: "I was a little bit disappointed with my distance.

"I was hoping to get close to the record again but I think qualification took a little bit out of me."

"Throwing my best - well, over my best - to get into the final wore me out a little bit," she continued.

"But I don't think anyone expected me to be there and I beat a lot of girls that were ranked a lot above me, and I think I proved I can pull it out when it matters."
