British diving hopeful Tom Daley has recovered from a patchy start to his solo diving campaign after returning to the Aquatics centre for the semi-finals of the ten-metre platform.

The 18-year-old survived a scare on Friday night, a poorly executed three-and-a-half somersault fifth dive drew scores of three, leaving him dangling dangerously in 16th, out of a cut of 18.

With co-diver and Team GB veteran Pete Waterfield already out, 17,500 home fans were left holding their breath as Daley leapt for his final dive.

Fortunately for the crowd though, the judges marked his reverse three-and-a-half somersaults with 8.5s to see him through in 15th with a score of 448.45.

The semi-finals were more successful for Daley, qualifying fourth with a score of 521.10.

While he failed to perfect the high scoring performance he will need to make the podium amid a strong field, he did show signs of his quality and a willingness to fight when he secured his highest score of the semi-final on his back three-and-a-half somersault - the dive he lost out on in the heats.
