Far from puddings: Yorkshire rules Team GB medal haul

Report by Sam Datta-Paulin

Things seem to be looking rosy in Yorkshire - the county is enjoying what can only be described as a glittering medal haul.

Athletes from the counties have notched up an astonishing four gold medals, two silvers and three bronzes. If the region were a country, it would be 11th in the medal table.

Podium places have come from the likes of the Brownlee brothers in the Triathlon and Olympic poster girl, heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

She told reporters she is proud to be from the area: "Obviously I'm very, very proud, and really surprised that we're doing so well and that so many athletes are from Yorkshire, it's just a brilliant feeling to be from such a great part of the country and have such successful sportsmen and women."

According to Lord Mayor of London David Wooton, who went to the same school as the Brownlee brothers, it is a combination of a competitive streak and bloody mindedness which makes the Yorkshire athlete formidable.

He said: "Doing well in sport has always been embedded. Plus the independent streak, we like doing things on our own, we don't really like taking advice, but we do like working hard, and the combination of the two is very good when it comes to sport."
