Mark Cavendish 'worried he let home crowds down'

Report by Sophie Foster

Dave Brailsford, Team GB's cycling director, says Mark Cavendish is disappointed with the road race result and is worried he let the home crowds down.

"Of course he's disappointed. But I don't think he could have asked for much more from the team. They absolutely emptied themselves for him today, and I think that goes a long way," said Brailsford.

He added: "But I think more than anything else when you race at home, and the amount of people who came out today was phenomenal, I think you feel a little bit like, 'Did we let eveybody down?' And that's hard to take I think."

The world road race champion will be forced to overcome this recent disappointment as he is riding a 100km race in Belgium on Sunday.
