Rebecca Adlington looks for Team GB's first gold

Report by Sophie Foster

Having picked up medal number one - silver in the women's road race - Britain is looking to Rebecca Adlington in a bid to get the country off the starting blocks in the hunt for gold medals on Sunday.

The swimmer's attempt to defend the two titles she won in Beijing four years ago has begun in the Aquatic Centre, after the 23-year-old squeezed into the final of the 400 metres freestyle in eighth place.

She dominated her race from start to finish but then had to look on as two extremely fast heats threatened to edge her out of the evening final.

Lizzie Armitstead won Team GB's first medal in the women's road race on Sunday afternoon.

In the men's competitions, Olympic sailing champion Ben Ainslie's assault on gold got off to a great start with a second-place finish in the opening race, while rowers Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter opened the defence of their Olympic title by winning their lightweight double scull heat.
