Sir Steve Redgrave: 'I'm available to light the flame'

Report by Louise Hulland

Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave has admitted he would "love" to light the Olympic flame and jokes he is "still available".

As the opening ceremony of London 2012 approaches, much of the event is under wraps, and Sir Steve has admitted he has not been asked to step in for the big moment.

However, he insists there is "still time to get the call", as organisers are keeping things to themselves for as long as possible.

He revealed that when he was asked to carry to torch in Henley two weeks ago he did not know any of the arrangements until the night before, so he is holding out hope he may be asked.

Other names in the running to light the Olympic Cauldren are David Beckham and Sir Roger Bannister.
