BBC sleuth drama Sherlock and its star Benedict Cumberbatch have been honoured with top awards at a US ceremony.

Sherlock was named best miniseries at the Critics Choice Television Awards, while its London-born star Cumberbatch, took home the top prize for best actor in a miniseries.

There was also success for other British talent, Cat Deeley was crowned best reality show host for So You Think You Can Dance and acclaimed thriller Homeland, which stars British actor Damian Lewis, was named best drama series at the awards in Los Angeles.

His co-star, US actress Claire Danes, was named best actress in a drama series for her role as bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison.

Mad Men's Christina Hendricks won best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in the 60s-set show.

And while The Voice saw its ratings plummet in the UK, the US version won the reality series category.
