Dog circus educates children in Japan

Report & Video by Anna Collinson

"Unwanted" dogs from the Wow Wow Dog Circus have been using their impressive tricks to educate children in western Tokyo on how to look after their pets.

Whether it is skipping, balancing on balls or narrow beams, there is nothing these pooches cannot do.

In Japan 100,000 dogs are abandoned and destroyed every year.

The circus has been visiting an elementary school in Tachikawa city to teach students how to look after their pets and encourage them to adopt animals from shelters, instead of buying them from pet shops.

"The main focus of the programme is to make them understand the value of life, while they are still kids, in the hope that they will pass on what they learned to others," said dog trainer Kayo Takeda.
