Brazilian man turns up to his own funeral

Report by Rob Gillett

A man has stunned his family after turning up to his own funeral in Brazil.

Gilberto Araujo had not been seen by his friends or relatives for months, and when the body of another man, who had been murdered in the city of Alagoinhas, turned up, it was misidentified by Gilberto's brother.

41-year-old Gilberto said: "When I walked through the door and saw the coffin, I was a bit flabbergasted.

"I asked "what is this?" and they said it was a service for me, and I said to them, I'm alive, I'm not dead!"

Having heard rumours that his family were planning a funeral for him, Gilberto tried to call a friend who was at the service but the call was dismissed as a prank.

He was left with no choice but to turn up at the wake.

An investigation is now underway to find out the real identity of the dead man.
