Sailboat breaks speed record in San Francisco Bay

Report by Mark Morris

An advanced multihull sailboat has broken the world record for the fastest speed over one nautical mile.

The DCNS Hydroptere sailed one mile in San Francisco Bay at a speed of 37.5knots or 43.2mph.

The San Francisco Bay Area Multihull Association were in attendance to certify that the Hydroptere actually broke the record.

The sailboat rises up out of the water on hydrofoils as it gains speed.

The one-mile record is in preparation for an upcoming attempt at setting a new sailing speed record between Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii.
