La Tomatina: Spain's tomato throwing festival

Report by Adam Sich

Tens of thousands of revellers have thrown 120 tonnes of squashed tomatoes at each other in Buñol as Spain held the huge food fight known as La Tomatina.

A sea of more than 40,000 alcohol-fuelled men and women packed into Plaza Mayor, many wearing swimming goggles to keep out the stinging juice.

Spectators peered over the balconies of surrounding buildings, some also chucking tomatoes on the chanting, dancing, food-fighting throng below.

Five trucks loaded with the tomatoes struggled to find space to squeeze through the streets as the fiesta progressed.

They unloaded the edible ammunition for one hour before a rocket sounded, signifying the end of the festival.

The participants then made their way out of the crush in the main square to wash themselves in the nearby river.
