Berlin Zoo is mourning the death of Bao Bao, one of the world's oldest male pandas.

The 34 year old is said to have died peacefully in his sleep on August 22.

Bao Bao was given to Germany by China back in November 1980.

He originally shared an enclosure with female panda Tjen Tjen, but then lived alone after her death in 1984.

As Berlin Zoo's only male panda, Bao Bao was hot property, but attempts to get him to mate were unsuccessful.

The cause of his death will be determined by an autopsy.
