Berlin Zoo unveils three-day-old elephant

Report by Sam Datta-Paulin

Berlin Zoo has unveiled the latest addition to its elephant herd - a three day old calf called Anchali.

The youngster, born to four-times mother Pang Pha, weighs a healthy 160kg, but is still dwarfed by its mother.

Dr Andreas Ochs, elephant curator at the zoo, said: "The birth took place without any incident. After all, Pang Pha is an experienced elephant mother.

"The birth was over at 1215am and by 1245am the little one was already standing on its feet."

He added: "Directly after the birth we already got the impression that it is a very healthy young animal.

"With its 160 kilos, it's pretty heavy and at the same time, very agile and alert.

"The fact that it was already on its feet almost alone after already half an hour is an indication that it's very strong which makes us hopeful for the future."
